Box office update: ‘The Lego Movie’
It seems that our childhood never dies. Those innocent days of playing with toys always remain within our mind, heart and soul. If you don’t agree, then just look at what Warner Bros. ‘The Lego Movie’ has achieved at the box office on Friday. It has collected an astounding US $ 17.1 million on a single day! The critics have given it a score of ‘A’ has also managed to surpass all the expectations by the makers, The Warner Brothers themselves as well! The start also means that the movie is all set to collect US$ 56 to US$ 60 million at the end of this weekend.
This US $ 60 million movie from the writer-directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord has finally discontinued the 11 week supremacy of ‘Frozen’. The most notable thing here is that ‘Frozen’ had not even made it to Friday’s top five with US $ 1.41 million collection. The sequel to ‘The Lego Movie’ has been already under the pen, this movie produced jointly by the Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow pic still has a long way to get as far as the February records are concerned. In 2004 ‘Passion of the Christ’s’ had collected US $ 83.8 million, which is still a record.
By the way George Coolney’s star studded movie, The Monuments Men which scored B+ by the movie critics, has collected US $ 7 million on Friday. This World War II subjected movie can look for US $ 20 million at an estimated collection over the weekend. The poor collection may be because of not so good critical respond as well. Otherwise a movie which has a star cast of George Coolney, Matt Demon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett and John Goodman can’t get the expected response is beyond anybody’s thinking. The recent adult targeted movies like The Artists, Moonrise Kingdom or Argo are just one of those movies which has got at US $ 19.5 million opening on the first weekend.
The movies flipped over this weekend has taken the third and fourth spots respectively. The Ice Cube buddy comedy by Kevin Hart, ‘Ride Along’ has earned US $ 2.6 million this Friday and is almost certain to cross US $ 100 million by the end of this weekend. The Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B Jordan starrer comedy flick ‘That Awkward Moment’ have surprised many by crawling into the fourth place in the collection of US $ 1.71 million. This will take the overall collection to US $ 13 million.
To finish the top 5 list The Weinstein Company’s Vampire Academy, which got the critics’ score of B+ has earned an estimated collection of US $ 1.43 on this Friday. This movie is based on Rachelle Maed’s YA series, which was opened in 2, 676 theaters across the US with PG-13 certification. The movie is expected to collect between US $ 4 and US $ 5 million by the close of this weekend. Well to be honest, this will not make the TWC happy as it is not going to get the double digit opening, but it won’t be considered as an all out flop movie as well because the budget is modest.

- The Monuments Men – US $ 7.0 million
- Ride Along – US $ 2.6 million
- That Awkward moment – US $ 1.71 million
